Winchmore Hill and Enfield 4 Royston 1

Royston struggled to hit top form on Saturday as they lost away to Winchmore and Enfield.

The Crows took an early lead from a goal by Owen Russell, but from then on it was all downhill for the away team.

Enfield pushed hard and pressed high up the field, which caused a lethargic Royston side no end of difficulty.

The home side took a 2-1 lead into half time but their goals, well finished as they were, had been gifted to them by some defensive errors.

Royston began the second half well, but their failure to capitalise was pounced upon by their hosts who added a further two goals before the end to comfortably take the points.

Enfield were deserving of their victory and Royston ended the match disgusted with their efforts.

AFTER good wins for both teams last week, this had been built up as a clash of the titans.

Such matches are notorious for bringing out the passion in a game of hockey, but wise words from coach Paul Viagi before the game let everyone know that he wanted his players to concentrate on their performances.

And so battle commenced.

A strong start to the game led to the seconds having the majority of the early play and their possession soon paid off when a short corner was smashed home by club captain Nick Broadley.

A second soon followed when some fine work by Mark Jacobs at the top of the D led to the ball breaking off a defender and being pushed into the bottom right hand corner of the goal, and the score was made 3-0 just before the break.

After half time a standard short corner found its way to Broadley and the captain scored his second of the game, and in the last 30 minutes the thirds had a handful of chances but were unable to convert any.

Chris Watson poached two late on to seal a 6-0 victory for the seconds, who reserved special praise for one fine, but unnecessary, stick stop save by their keeper Robert Frost.

Royston IV 3 Bishop's Stortford VI 0

HHaving given away three points last weekend because they couldn't put a side together, Royston's fourth team came out fighting against a young and creative visiting Stortford side that were three points above them in second place in the league.

Coaching from the touchline due to injury Colin Smith marshaled a disciplined side that hounded the young Stortford players and closed down every attack as they pressed the Royston defence.

It was down to Ali Wallace playing alongside Jamie Johnson in midfield to catch the Stortford defence out when he picked up a lose ball just inside the Stortford half on the wide left and went on a mazy dribble.

Wallace beat four players, ran across the defence to the right and shot low and hard across the keeper's right to make it one nil.

In the second half Royston were temporarily reduced to ten men when Beeve Gourd was given a yellow card for a heavy tackle, but the visitors were unable to take advantage of their extra man before Gourd rejoined the game.

Gourd then set up Bateman for Royston's second and then lobbed the keeper himself to make the score 3-0 and give Royston three well-deserved points.
