Royston Runner Geoff Russell has capped off a fantastic year by being voted the Male Athlete of the Year, at Freedom Tri club based in Letchworth GC, for the second time in four years.

Russell is a member of the Great Britain duathlon team and this year he has won Triathlon England‘s Duathlon Championship, the British Triathlon Federation Duathlon Championship and the UK Long Distance Duathlon Championship in his age group (male 65 - 69).

On trips aboard this year the athlete was second at the European Long Distance Duathlon Championship in Horst, Netherlands, and was again second at the World Long Distance Championship in Zofingen, Switzerland.

Russell is a member of Ashwell Cycle Club and Freedom Tri but his first love is running, a sport he has competed in for more than 40 years.

This year he has also won the Herts Half Marathon and Eastern Vets Half Marathon and 10 mile titles as well as numerous first in age groups at road races.

A prolific competitor, Russell has no intentions of giving up just yet and has been selected for the Great Britain team for next year where he intends to avenge his second place at the European Championships.

A grandfather of three, Russell still works full time and trains twice per day.
