ROYSTON'S Jenny McGuigan impressed as Cambs and Hunts got off to a brilliant start in the inaugural meeting of the east region of the Women's County Match Week at The Links in Newmarket.

In their opening match against Bedfordshire, Cambs and Hunts won the morning foursomes 2-1 with wins for McGuigan and playing partner Miranda Brain (Gogs), and Janet Phipps (Gogs) and Sarah Greenall (Links).

The afternoon singles provided more success when Hermione Fitzgerald (Links) won the opening singles, but Bedfordshire drew level by winning the next two matches. However, Cambs and Hunts closed out the match with wins for Brain, Caroline Agnew (Links) and Phipps.

In the other matches Hertfordshire handed out a heavy 81/2-1/2 defeat to Norfolk while Essex beat Suffolk by 61/2-21/2.

On the second day Cambs and Hunts lost 81/2-1/2 to Essex, with Hermione Fitzgerald halving her match. This gave a match result of 81/2-1/2.

In the other matches Suffolk defeated Norfolk 6-3 and Hertfordshire won 6-3 against Bedfordshire.

On the third day Cambs and Hunts drew 41/2-41/2 with Norfolk.

Cambs and Hunts edged ahead 2-1 with wins for Janet Phipps and Jackie Gregg and Caroline Agnew and Sarah Greenall.

In the afternoon singles Norfolk won the first two matches to go into a lead, but Cambs and Hunts fought back with excellent wins for Sarah Smith (Links) and Janet Phipps.

With the match all square McGuigan produced a brilliant fight back to secure the all important half, having been 4 down.

In the other matches Essex defeated Bedfordshire 8-1 and Hertfordshire won 7-2 against Suffolk.

Cambs and Hunts then faced Suffolk, losing 7-2 after trailing 2-1, with Janet Phipps and Jackie Gregg recording an early victory.

In the afternoon singles only Jackie Gregg and Miranda Brain managed to halve their matches.

In the other matches Bedfordshire defeated Norfolk 51/2-31/2 and Hertfordshire gained the upper hand in the possible title decider with a 51/2-31/2 victory over Essex.

The final day found Cambs and Hunts taking lost 6-3 to Hertfordshire side who just needed a win to secure the title.

After the morning foursomes Cambs and Hunts were 2-1 down with Hermione Fitzgerald and Chelsey Herbert (Gogs) on her debut, recording the only victory.

In the six singles matches Cambs and Hunts put up a valiant fight before losing out 4-2. Jackie Gregg played some excellent golf to win the top match 4 & 3, and Hermione Fitzgerald gained her second victory of the day finishing her match 2 up.

In the other matches Essex defeated Norfolk 7-2 to finish in second place overall and Bedfordshire secured a 51/2-31/2 win over Suffolk to take third place.
