IT was a busy week for Royston's Matt Coppen who helped the club to a number of victories including two County Singles wins.

The youngster was also part of the County fours who overcame Baldock 23-12, alongside Don Sheriff, Stewart Brown, and Tony William.

Coppen then joined Simon Lee and Brown in the club's Counties Triples match with Riverain, in which Royston demolished their opponents 34-8.

Coppen then turned solo for the County Singles, beating fellow Royston bowler Mick O'Flanagan 21-6, and then seeing off Roebuck's Martin Brackley in convincing fashion with a 21-12 win.

Elsewhere, Royston beat Howard Gardens in the North Herts Inter Club League Two Fours. It was an easy win for Royston, who coasted home with a 44-28 victory.

In the Ladies North Herts Pairs, Beryl Huckle and Yvonne Whitehouse overwhelmed their Whitehorn opponents 31-5. Huckle also shone in the North Herts Singles to secure a whitewash over her Stevenage Town opponent, beating her 21-0.

The ladies team also beat Letchworth Garden City in the North Herts Triples. In a tight game Royston edged ahead in the last end and clinched the game 22-14.

Royston have also progressed to the next round of the McMullen Trophy, beating the Three Horseshoes of Stevenage in a format of three rinks of four.

Playing on rink three, Brian Pepper, Terry Hollands, Derek Goodwin and skip Bob Porter were comfortable winners 18-11.

On rink two Simon Lee, Keith Dockree, Sheriff, and skip Brown romped home with a 22-10 win.

On rink one Coppen continued his fine form, joining Mel Flack, Laurie Ramsay and skip Peter Adams to beat their opponents 31-9.

Coppen was in international action last night (Wednesday) representing England in the British Isles Tournament. Coppen was facing the Scottish under 25 singles champion.

n BASSINGBOURN visited second placed Sawston in the Cambridge and District League Division 1 and suffered a narrow defeat that enabled their opponents to close the gap at the top of the table.

Ken Clark, Roy Chaplain, and Val Francis had an up-and-down night on rink two, and after establishing a 9-3 lead, five ends were lost and Sawston won the game 12-11.

Vic Mills, Don Slater, and Sid Manning also had a close game with their opponents and on a tense rink Bassingbourn were again on the wrong end of a frustrating 10-11 defeat.

However, Bob Stevenson, Joe Cipullo, and Bill Manley restored some pride on rink four, edging out Sawston to win by one shot and ended the game 17-16 winners.

In another close encounter Bassingbourn's Jamie Stewart, Don Laing and Ian Stewart also lost by one, going down 16-15 after getting off to a disappointing start.

Bassingbourn suffered their first blip of the season in a narrow 55-53 defeat, with Sawston closing the gap to just four points.

After the defeat, Bassingbourn hoped to return to winning ways with a win against Chesterton A, and did so in style.

Bassingbourn got off to a good start, winning 18-8 on rink three, with Jamie Stewart, Sid Manning, and Ken Clark dominating throughout.

Don Slater Joe Cippulo and Bill Manley also secured a victory despite trailing 8-2. The trio fought back in comprehensive style to finish 17-10 winners.

On rink five Anne Brown, Toni Infanti, and Ian Stewart trailed 10-2, but like their team mates fought back and deservedly won the game 15-12.

On rink six Bassingbourn's players again had to make a comeback after trailing 14-2.

But Maureen Hammond, Andy Brown, and Dave Lester upped the pressure and after a tight last two ends managed to claw their way back with a 17-17 draw.

The club's tremendous comeback meant Bassingbourn claimed a valuable 6.5 points, and opened their lead at the top to an impressive 10 points.
