Geoff Russell’s six-hour ultra marathon British record has now been officially ratified at 35 miles 1,584 yards (57.776km).

Royston Runner Russell, 67, set the record earlier this month at Astley Park, Chorley, Lancashire, running 35 miles in the six-hour event.

The course, although laps around a park, was deemed a ‘road’ course rather than a ‘track’ that must be on a running track.

There was some debate about the exact distance of the course at Chorley but following a re-measure of the park, it was deemed exactly 732.274 metres (801 yards) meaning the record was confirmed.

Following his epic run, Russell said: “It is as much in the mind as in the legs. Speed is not important.

“Years of experience, thousands of miles running and a good support crew looking after you all contribute to the effort on the day but none of this will bring success without the right mental attitude.”

Russell is heading to Holland the week before Christmas for a 24-hour track race entitled ‘De LangsteNacht’ (the Longest Night), with weather permitting at the event.
