ROYSTON'S Roger Davies, Terry Hollands and Roger Neville were at home against a team from Riverain led by D Jeffries in the L and D Triples, and the trio won event with a late surge by 19 shots to 16.

On Monday, it was the turn of Don Sheriff, Mel Flack, Stewart Brown, and skip Matt Coppin to challenge a Baldock team led by Dave Turner in the County Fours and although a close tie in the early stages, Royston always looked the stronger and manager to win 29-18.

Two Royston pairs were involved in the National Over 55 competition.

Will Martin and Roger Neville took on Terry Saunders and John Crosby from Baldock and started well, being 16-7 up on end 14.

At this point, however, they went to sleep and allowed their opponents to score 10 shots over the next six ends.

On end 20 it was 18-17, but at this point the pair recovered and scored a two which allowed them to lunge across the line by just three shots.

The other Over 55 Pairs concerned Don Sheriff and Peter Adams who were confronted by D Fox and B McCoom of Bishop's Stortford.

The Royston duo had little trouble in scoring on most ends and strolled home to a 20-9 victory.

Royston had two teams in action during the County Triples day, with both playing away.

Peter Graves, Mel Flack and Don Sheriff were at Baldock to take on their three skipped by Ian Greig and apart from three single shots and a two, Sheriff scored two threes, a four and a five to coast home by 20 shots to 11.

Simon Lee, Stewart Brown, and Matt Coppin were at Whitethorn for their match against R Adams, M Farron and B Platten.

This was an impressive win for the Royston three who allowed their opponents to score on just six of the 18 ends, whilst they marched on to a 21 shots to seven triumph.

Elsewhere at Royston Bowls Club, the North Herts Inter League involved two fours with Royston at home to face a team from the Three Horsehoes.

On rink one Roger Davies, Peter Fisk, Terry Hollands and Peter Adams romped home with end scores of a five, three fours and three threes to leave their opponents standing on the wrong side of a 35-11 scoreline, while on rink two Stan Whitehouse, K Frostick, Keith Dockree and Mick O'Flanagan had a convincing win 25-13.

In the County Pairs a Royston pair of Simon Lee and Stewart Brown were at home against T Saunders and M Wintrip of Baldock.

This was a fairly easy win for the Royston pair as they faced only token resistance from the Baldock duo.

In the end they recorded a 24-11 victory.

Also at home in the County Pairs were Laurie Ramsay and Mick O'Flanagan who were matched against T and A Dowie from Roebuck in Stevenage.

This match ran a similar course to the above game, with a Royston win of 22 shots to 13.

Royston's Peter Graves, Mel Flack and Don Sheriff were over at Holwell to confront A Penson, M Reidy and N Houghton in the L&D Triples.

This was a fairly close game but the Royston threesome managed a 21 shots to 14 success.

Royston had two teams in action on Thursday in the L&D Pairs but it was unfortunate that both teams facing each other were from Royston.

Mel Flack and Don Sheriff were up against Mike Randall and Colin Wilson and it was the latter who suffered defeat as they went down 36 shots to 11.

Friday evening saw around 50 supporters and visitors as Royston were competing in the English Wills Trophy on rinks one, two and three.

Their opposition was Whitethorn from Letchworth.

On rink one Stan Whitehouse, Terry Hollands, Roger Necille and Mick O'Flanagan galloped away to a 30 shots to 14 win, on Rink two Colin Pawson, Mel Flack, Matt Coppin and Peter Adams had a closer game but managed a comfortable 23 shots to 18 win and rink three saw an even closer encounter with Brian Pepper, Roger Davies, Don Sheriff and Stewart Brown struggling to contain the Whitethorn four.

Being 11-4 down at one point, they slowly came back into the game and on end 18 went into the lead but this was short lived as Whitethorn edged over the line 20 to 18.

Still, it was a satisfying evening the Royston men.

Royston ladies welcomed Stevenage Town ladies on Saturday for a friendly.

Royston won on one rink and lost on the other and the end result was a win for the home side with 54 shots to 38.

Also on Saturday, Hitchin visited Royston for a friendly. Royston won on three rinks and lost on one by two shorts and romped home with a decisive win of 91 shots to 59.

It was Buntingford who visited Royston on Sunday for a four rink men and two of ladies friendly.

The ladies had a close encounter, winning 21-12 on one rink and losing 13 -22 on the other and the men had an easy win on all rinks to coast home 98-55.
