ROYSTON Rugby held its Annual Fun Day at the Heath last Friday.

This provided an opportunity for children of all ages from three to 12 to try out Rugby and if they enjoyed it, find out how and when to take the next step of joining Royston Rugby Club when the season starts on September 5.

The weather conditions were ideal with cloud cover and a cooling breeze to encourage people to come out without the threat of overheating or becoming sunburnt. The afternoon followed its familiar format of five 20 minute sessions interspersed with five-minute drinks breaks.

Between 50 and 60 participants from a range of local schools took part this year with over half of the children in the under-seven age category.

County rugby development officer, Kevin Green, and Tannery Drift teacher Matt Brazier looked after the 3-6-year-olds, club secretary, Jamie Johnson, and coach Stewart Smith entertained the 7-9-year-olds, while coach Colin Letch, assisted by Stephen Capewell and Rab Bissett, coached the older group. The fact some of the schools had not broken up was unfortunate although this did not deter a few latecomers. The date was chosen to coincide with North Herts Olympic Week.

Thanks go to Roz Johnson and Liam Boardman for working tirelessly behind the scenes preparing drinks, registering players and cooking the BBQ.

Usually 10-20 per cent of the children that come to the Fun Day follow it up by joining in September.
