The Royston Roses netball team have been reflecting on a successful year after being crowned Cambridgeshire County League Champions.

Following on from the England Roses winning the Commonwealth games Royston’s talented Roses followed in their footsteps by achieving their own goal.

Royston Netball Club was established in 1977 and is now a well-established group that plays the sport in leagues across Herts and Cambs.

Club stalwart Karen Hume told Crow Sport: “We had one goal this year – to top the Cambs county league.

“After two seasons of coming second the fight was on to win this season and go through to the regional play-offs.”

Royston faced 19 games during the season against some tough opposition.

The Roses started the season well winning the first six games. In the seventh match Royston were losing until a last minute shot from Daisy Needham, their highly-rated junior member, saw them achieve a draw.

The rest of the season followed the same style as the first six matches, with Royston winning all of the their games, to lift silverware and become champions.

Karen added: “The defensive effort of the team stood out as they achieved the lowest amount of goals by any team to be let through the net.

“The players that formed the team were a mixture of old and new but it proved to be the perfection combination.

“Superb coaching from Royston’s Level 2 coach Tracey Stimson made the dream possible.”

League success ensured the talented Roses progressed through to the play-off’s for a space in the Regional East League.

However, that was where this season’s valiant effort ended, because, despite a huge effort they narrowly missed out by a single point – meaning the team have a new goal for the 2018-2019 season.

Royston are a friendly yet competitive club who play in five leagues in Herts and Cambs. They have open trials on Wednesday and on Wednesday, July 4 at Greenaway School from 7.45pm to 9pm. To learn more follow the Roses on Twitter @RoystonNetball or email on Roystonnetball@outlook.com.
