ROYSTON romped to a comfortable win on The Heath.
After two successive wins, Royston Vets were just beginning to find their rhythm and it was unfortunate that Wendens Ambo found the Vets dominant in all phases of the game.
All credit to the visitors as they stuck manfully to the task and they scored a fine try in the last stages of the game.
Royston Vets playing the first half with the wind behind them found ball handling difficult and the game was littered with scrummages but with the Royston pack were soon disrupting Wendons Ambo put in and winning the ball against the head.
Props Richard Gutteridge and Rab Bissett and then David Howell in the second half had their opposite numbers in knots and it was easy pickings for Billy Payne, back after first team duties, as hooker.
The powerhouses Brian Bergen and then Jerry Cottrell provided the strength from deep within the scrummage and Ambo were often pushed off their own ball.
The first half was tight and it took two beautiful swerving runs from Neil Smith senior to open the scoring. Royston Vets back line were not afraid to run from deep.
Steve Bristow charging at the Wendens Ambo's centres created the confusion and Neil Smith cut back inside and raced for the try line to notch up a brace of tries in the first half.
Cameron Murdoch took the long route around the outside but the opposition had no answer to his speed.
The rest of the backs were not going to be outdone.
With a great combination of forwards and backs, space was found for the Dacey boys and Colin found his brother Paul for him to stride for the line. Colin converted two tries in the first half and then a further two in the second.
The three substitutions in the second half did not disrupt the pattern of Royston's play and it was not long before forwards Billy Payne and Tony Richardson were each on the score sheet.
Great line-out work with Tony Richardson, winner of the man-of-the- match award, the front jumper and the mighty Stuart Highland the mid jumper won plenty of ball and pinched much from Wendens Ambo.
The loose ball play was all Royston's as well.
Flanker Eddie Crowe, back after a long lay off played as if he had never been away and Paul Rabbets playing probably his best game of the season were every were on the park ensuring that the opposition were always on the back foot and unsure were the next attack was coming from.
The closing try was the speed of Neil Smith junior.
Again good clean ball from the pack and the backs spun the ball wide for Neil to latch on to and outstrip the defence.
