Royston endured a frustrating afternoon on Saturday as the lost 18-10 to Old Actonians.

The Crows did not get off to the best of starts after a stray pass found its way into the opposition centre’s hands who offloaded to the winger to score under the posts. The conversion was successful.

Royston responded quickly with a try of their own. Adam Smith picked the ball up from the ruck just outside the 22 metre line before putting a delicate kick for Michael Schurch to chase. The opposition winger picked up the ball Schurch dislodged it in the tackle and Dan Ritsema went over for an easy try.

Royston piled on the pressure and were close to scoring a second try but silly penalties saw them penned back in their own half and just before half-time Old Actonians converted a penalty to lead 10-5.

The hosts started the second half brighter than they started the first, with good counter rucking from John Brain and Charlie Sparks turning the ball over to allow quick ball out to the backs. With the ball in hand, Ritsema beat his opposite man and score a second try. Once again the conversion was missed.

Old Actonians were not finished yet and hit back with a penalty conversion midway through the half to regain the lead.

Royston were pushing hard for a third try to win the game but left themselves open when a turnover ball allowed the No.8 to pick the ball up and beat three men before scoring and unconverted try to settle the match.
