A 25 year wait for first XV silverware could come to an end for Royston RFC this Sunday.

They face Borehamwood at Watford RFC in the Herts RFU Presidents’ Trophy final, kick-off 3pm.

After securing promotion in Herts/Middlesex 2 Royston got to finish the season off with a run in the cup.

On Sunday they travelled down to Watford for the semi-final game.

Watford, currently a league below, were more than fired up for the clash and their aggression and hunger for the ball was apparent for all to see in the early stages.

They were slightly edging Royston in the forward department, however a piece of sheer brilliance from Tommy Dummett saw quick ball being distributed to the backline and Ben Ritsema was able to score the first points of the game.

Royston then looked to kill the game off in the same manner they have in their league games this season by sucking in the opposition pack enough to create space out wide again which left Ben Ritsema to cross the tryline again after an excellently worked move with twin brother Dan.

Royston, thinking the game was all but in the bag even in these early stages, then let their foot off the peddle.

Some excellent kicking from the Watford scrum half had Royston pinned on their tryline and a hacked clearance led to a Watford lineout five metres out.

Watford used a move straight from the training paddock and their big number 8 crashed over from close quarters.

Again this led to a Royston rejuvenation.

Straight from the kick-off Alford combined with Gilbert and Green to lead a huge Royston charge which left a large gap in the defence for Dan Ritsema to score Royston’s third just before half-time.

Two early penalty kicks for Watford left them closing in on Royston’s 15 points at the start of the second half.

However, a superb solo effort from Tristan Tegg saw him crash through wave after wave of Watford defence to score an excellent try under the posts to restore Royston’s advantage.

With the game now getting to the closing stages Watford started to tire, and with Scott Easy coming on their day was about to get a lot worse.

He instantly stamped his authority on the game, and with a trademark 75 metre dash, he unselfishly popped the ball to Ben Ritsema to complete his hat-trick. With the game now in the bag, it was just left for Will Cotterell to have the last say, an excellent cross field kick saw him collect his own kick and touch down in the corner to score the last points of the game. This made the final score 32-13.

All support would be muchly appreciated as Royston try to finish off a memorable season in style.
