Royston racer has to settle for second place

The 12-year-old Greneway School student started from third on the grid in heat one and quickly found himself dropping to fourth out of the first corner after Colchester’s Harry Smith made a clean start from second and pulled away from the pack.

Callum remained determined, though, and worked his way up the grid throughout the race but only as far as second place with Smith securing a comfortable win.

In heat two, Smith again made the most of a good start and Bonfield had to work his way through the pack up to second to give chase to Smith who looked in fine form. Although Callum made up some good ground to close the gap he was a good one second behind as they crossed the line.

The tone of the day had been set as they started heat three. With Smith and Bonfield starting from the back of the grid, both soon worked their way through with Smith emerging as the leader. Callum made harder work of passing the pack and Smith finished ahead of Bonfield by over three seconds.

Smith started the final on pole with Bonfield on the outside of the track in second place.

From the off Smith was clean away with Ryan Hawes, in third, close on his tail and fourth placed Luke Pharoah closed the gap behind Hawes as they went into the first corner.

The Royston racer found himself closed out on the outside of the bend, and as they exited Bonfield found himself down in fith place.

With his work cut out, Callum had to use his experience to gain any ground and found it difficult to pass Pharoah and an improving Hawes.

With two laps remaining Bonfield had made it up to second but that was as high as he would be placed on a day where Smith took all the honours and Bonfield had to settle for second best.

His only consolation was securing the fastest lap in his class. With Smith not running in the Club 2000 championship Callum still leads the Mini Max title challenge.
