Royston Town Vets 2

FROM a respectable and deserved 1-1 at half time, the pace, power and flair of a far fitter and larger Cambridge squad proved too much for the Crows, as they finally went down 6-2 on a quagmire of a pitch.

A much changed Royston side missing the unavailable Ian King, Kevin Barthrop, Daryl Quinn along with the injured Nick King, Richard Harris and Nick Ryding seemed to have adhered to the request from Cambridge not to field such a young side.

Merv Chaffey was back in goal, Nick Humphries and Brain Cannon making long awaited returns, with the influential Mark King in the centre of midfield.

Town played some stylish, simple football in the early stages, looking good going forward and in control at the back, with King and Ian Stubbs dictating matters in midfield. Paul Lewis and Colin McArthur were causing problems up front for the Cambridge defence, both going near but not close enough. Humphries was a constant threat on the left.

A double substitution from Cambridge saw the injection of much more youthful pace and power, shortly resulting in them going one behind. Paul Lewis soon pulled one back from the penalty spot, following a hand ball and Town were happy to go in at half time with the scores level.

The second half eventually saw what was now clearly a much stronger Cambridge side than expected, go further ahead through Trevor George, Nick Anthrop and Andy Crouch, his second of the game, despite the valiant and at times heroic efforts of Chaffey, which included a superb penalty save.

Lewis made it 4-2, after McArthur flicked on a Humphries cross. George finally beat Chaffey from the spot, after yet another penalty and Mick Harland completed the scoring as Town ran out of steam.

Manager Terry Gore was delighted with the commitment, work rate and effort from his side, who simply could not match the pace of the younger elements of the opposition and will certainly not be listening to any future requests to play an 'older' team in the future.

This week Royston will be without in form striker Paul Lewis when Ashwell Vets are the visitors to Garden Walk KO 10.30am
