ROYSTON hosted a round of the Eastern Counties Under-30s League which involved teams of young players from Hertfordshire and Norfolk.

There were four rinks of fours, but two Hertfordshire players failed to appear which meant that two rinks played with their lead and number two having three bowls, and at the end of the match Herts would have to forfeit 25 per cent of their score.

This was a good contest to watch, with some excellent bowling from the bowlers, which included some 12- and 14-year-olds together with Royston champion Matt Coppin.

Hertfordshire clinched a win, having accumulated enough shots to surpass Norfolk's score even after the mandatory 25 per cent deduction.

On Monday two Royston Ladies rinks went to Holwell in the North Herts League. This game ended with the home team the victors, easing past Royston with a 40-23 scoreline.

Mick O'Flanagan had an easy win over L Bull of Roebuck in the Letchworth & District Singles, coasting home 21-10.

In another L&D Singles game, two Royston contestants encountered each other. Peter Adams didn't give Keith Dockree a chance to get into gear and romped home 21-6.

Tuesday saw an L&D Triples game between Royston's Laurie Ramsay, Mick O'Flanagan, and Peter Adams, and a three from Norton skipped by V Meed. Royston had the edge throughout the game scoring two fours and two threes to pass the post 22-13.

Royston's Simon Lee, Stewart Brown and Matt Coppin played away on a neutral green at Rosedale and had a decisive win over Welwyn Garden City in the County Triples.

Scoring a five on one end, it was Royston who were always ahead, and they waltzed home 20-13.

In the Ladies County Pairs, Royston's Brenda Hollands and Yvonne Whitehouse, travelled to Batchworth (St Albans) to play their next round and produced a decisive 26-14 win.

Wednesday saw Don Sheriff and Peter Adams travel to Cheshunt to take on B Milson and B Spence from Whit Hern in the National Over 55s Pairs competition. The Royston duo trailed for most of the game but managed to gather a three and two fours over the last three ends to finish with a 27 shots to 18 victory.

After reaching the last 16 in the County Pairs, Royston's Laurie Ramsay and Mick O'Flanagan were outplayed by a pair from Ware and although disappointed with their performance they were pleased with their run.

Royston's Simon Lee and Stewart Brown faced P Murray and J Rumball, from the Garston B.C., in the County Pairs. This was a neutral green round and was played at Roebuck. Both teams were slow to get started, but at end 11 Royston eased away from their opponents to cross the line with a 20 shots to 12 win.

At Roebuck on Wednesday was the Royston team of Brian Pepper, Stan Whitehouse and Rodney Dean in the L&D Triples round against a three lead by J Brackley. The Dean team led all of the way to the finish with a final score of 21-9.

On Thursday Royston welcomed Coton in the Meldreth & District League and it turned out to be an important win as they won all four rinks to collect seven points.

Friday saw Brenda Hollands and Yvonne Whitehouse attempt to progress in the Ladies County Pairs but they were edged out of by their opponents.

Two rinks of Royston Ladies were in action on Friday in the North Herts League against Stevenage.

The rink of Joan Knights, Eileen Hyde, Pam Keating and Evelyn Huffer had a close game and were pipped 20 shots to 22, while on the other rink Beryle Huckle, Gillian Fisk, Shirley Pawson and Eunice Dockree galloped to a 33-17 win, which clinched the tie 53-39.
