ROYSTON’S Mick O’Flanagan enjoyed a good day on Tuesday, August 10, when he eased his way into the Letchworth & District Singles Quarter Finals after beating Baldock’s Terry Saunders 21-7.

ROYSTON’S Mick O’Flanagan enjoyed a good day on Tuesday, August 10, when he eased his way into the Letchworth & District Singles Quarter Finals after beating Baldock’s Terry Saunders 21-7.

Anne and Will Martin also beat Stan Whitehouse and Pam Keating in the L&D Mixed Pairs. This was a close game with neither side being able to gain dominance until end 16, when the Martin’s grabbed a five and then two threes plus a single, which clinched the game at 26-17.

In the L&D Fours, Royston’s Roger Davies, Laurie Ramsay, Mick O’Flanagan and skip Peter Adams found themselves in a tough game against a four from Roebuck BC, skipped by Kevin Lamacraft. On end nine, Adams was 11-4 up, but this was not to last as Roebuck came back into the game with a four, three twos and couple of singles to narrowly beat Adams to the line at 18 shots to 15.

On Sunday, August 8, it was the Presidents Day, a fun day for all club members in the form of Australian Pairs Bowls. This involves two pairs playing 18 ends, with the lead and skip changing positions at regular intervals during the game. The two highest scoring pairs play just three ends in the final to decide the winners. With 14 pairs taking part on seven rinks, it was certainly an enjoyable day. On this occasion the winners were Peter Fisk and Shirley Pawson, who just beat Mike Smith and partner Eileen Hyde by one shot.

Royston’s Vets were away to Letchworth Garden City BC on Tuesday, August 10 and, despite the match being abandoned due to rain, Royston were declared winners by 35 shots to 30.

Royston welcomed Coleridge BC last Wednesday to play a Meldreth & District League match of four mixed triples. Royston won on three rinks and only lost on one. Derek Goodwin stole the day by once more galvanising his rink of O Maris and K Whithear to defeat the opposition by 28 shots to 7.

Overall Royston won 67 shots and six points to Coleridge’s 45 shots and

one point.

On Saturday, Eileen Hyde and Bob Porter were away in the same competition to B & S Bradbury of Letchworth Conservatives BC. In a competitive game, it was the Royston duo who came out on top with a comfortable 25-14 victory.

Royston visited Hatfield BC on the same day for a six mixed rinks friendly. Royston won on three and lost on three, but it was a close game overall. President Shirley Pawson dropped a six near the end of her game, but hung on to win by two shots.

Will Martin, on the other hand, inspired his rink to romp home with a 34 shots to 15 margin, during which they grabbed two fives, a four, and three threes. A good performance by Royston, as they won by 10 shots in a 118-108 victory.

In a five mixed rinks friendly game on Sunday, Royston welcomed Hertford BC. Royston only lost on one rink, by a mere 10 shots. Overall it was a fairly close game but it was rink three of Beryl Huckle, Mel Cooper, Gillian Fisk and skip Ron Whithear who sprinted to a massive score of 42-4. Royston won 114- 67 overall.
