ROYSTON won two of their matches in the recent County Triples day.

Playing at home, Simon Lee, Stewart Brown and skip Matt Coppen dropped only eight shots in their game against a trio from Holwell, strolling home to a 29-8 win. It must be noted that Coppen found himself six shots down on the very first end, but with a wood of controlled weight, he removed three opposition woods to drop only a three.

Royston’s Don Sheriff skipped his team of Roger Davies and Keith Dockree to a narrow win of 16 shots to 14 in their game against a three from the Three Horseshoes BC.

It was a close call for Peter Adams in his National 55 and Over Singles match played at the Welwyn and District BC. His opponent, M Poole, managed to match Adams for most of the game, to go into the 20th end at 17 shots each. Poole crept ahead and was 20-17 up on end 22, but Adams kept his cool and picked up a one and a three to fall across the line by just one shot to claim victory at 21-20.

In the North Herts Ladies Fours, the Royston four of Maureen Gisby, Gillian Fisk, Anne Martin and skip Pam Keating were playing away to a team at Roebuck BC. This game concluded with a nail-biting finish. Royston were just two shots up going into the last end so every bowl had to count. But things went very wrong for the Royston skip as she found herself five shots adrift with only her last wood remaining. With a perfectly executed delivery she drew in for the second bowl, which only allowed her opponents a solitary single shot as Royston won 17-16.

The Vets also played that day but there was no runaway victory in this one, but Buntingford did pip Royston to the post by a nose with the score at Royston 77 shots, and Buntingford 84.

Royston, playing at home, welcomed Little Shelford to contest another round of the MDL. This was an evens all-round game with no side being more than a few shots ahead at any time. In the end the match was declared a draw with each side awarded 56 shots and 3.5 points each.

Two Royston teams were involved in the County Pairs. Matt Coppen and Peter Adams beat Paul Turner and Martin Brackley from Roebuck BC with a shining 22 shots to 5 triumph.

It was disappointment for Peter Graves and Will Martin in their match at Baldock against T Saunders and M Wintrip. The Royston pair matched their opponents all the way and were 19 shots each on the 19th end. Over the remaining two ends Baldock grabbed four shots to edge a 23 shots to 19 win.

In a County Singles game Peter Adams was unceremoniously outplayed by his club mate Simon Lee. Lee has been playing well this season and caught Adams out by sprinting away at the start of the game. Although Adams stepped up a gear late in the game, Lee was too far ahead and cruised over the line to a 21-8 victory.

Peter Adams was in action again on the same day, this time he was playing away at Datchworth in the third round of the Letchworth and District Singles. His opponent was S Chamberlain who gave Adams a run for his money. However, it was success for Adams as he edged to a 23 shots to 19 win.

Royston had success in the MDL game played at the Queen Edith BC and Royston won with 73 shots and five points, against Queen Edith who score 67 shots and two points.

In a ladies friendly game consisting of one rink of fours and one of triples against the Stotfold BC, Royston won by 39 shots to Stotfold’s 22.

In a Ladies County Pairs game, Royston’s Brenda Hollands and Yvonne Whitehouse had a comfortable win of 20 shots to 14 over G Page and W Reid from the Baldock BC.

Playing in the L and D Mixed Pairs, Royston’s Stan Whitehouse and Pam Keating scored at a steady tempo to drift passed the post with 22 shots over their opposition of P Young and V Mountjoy from the Letchworth Conservatives, who scored just 11 shots.

The Royston Vets were in action at Hitchin and although the rink of Kath Whithear, Don Ward and skip Ron Colton put in a sterling effort by winning on their rink by 24 shots to 10, it wasn’t enough to prevent Royston losing the game by 52 shots to Hitchin’s 64.

Royston fielded a team of three rinks of men and two rinks of ladies in their friendly with the North Mymms club on Saturday. Although Rodney Dean’s rink scored 27 shots to 11, a pat on the back must go to George Mayoss, Roger Davies, George Lewis and skip Terry Hollands who romped home with a whopping 30-9 win and an overall score of Royston 99 shots to North Mymms’ 75 shots.
