Although Royston fielded a strong team in chilly conditions on Saturday at Rosehill Bowls Club, Hoddesdon, their opponents relentlessly held on, edging their way to 71-66 aggregate victory.

Gillian Fisk, in the singles, fought hard and was unlucky to lose on the last end as her opponent’s last bowl just tipped onto the jack. President Linda O’Flanagan, with Shirley Pawson, earned an excellent 21-14 win.

In the triples, Eileen Sheriff, Pam Keating and Eunice Dockree all played well but were out-maneuvered, going down 18-7. Finally the fours of Joan Knights, Anne Martin, Yvonne Whitehouse and Eileen Hyde managed to scoop success in the final moments with 21 shots.

Friendly games always give light relief after the intensity of more serious matches and Sawbridgeworth was no exception. Although the weather numbed hands it failed to spoil an enthusiastic and laughter-filled afternoon even though Royston lost by a small margin.

Continuing their successes in the Midweek League, Royston played away at Queen Edith’s Bowls Club in Cambridge resulting in a resounding 74-59 win earning them six more points.

Four County Pairs games were played this week. Matt Coppen and Simon Brown played away at The Three Horse Shoes, pulling ahead so decisively (36-4) that only 12 ends were played and their opponents conceded the game.

At home Peter Adams and Laurie Ramsay, whose opponents were also from The Three Horse Shoes, recorded a resounding 29-11 win. Two further pairs games at home resulted in home wins for Don Sheriff and Roy Neville (21-18) against Roebuck, while Keith Dockree and Simon Brown (16-15) beat Riveraine.

More success followed in the County Club League where Eddie Collins, Derek Goodwin Simon Brown and Matt Coppen won brilliantly 35-8, while Stan Whitehouse, Owen Maris, Roger Neville and Peter Adams were also on excellent form winning 21-14.

To round off an overall successful week for Royston, in the Letchworth and District Pairs, Peter Fisk and Will Martin won on home territory 28-20.
