Crows boss Steve Castle believes Royston’s last two matches have given him a selection headache for Saturday’s Southern League Central match against Godalming Town at Garden Walk, writes Tom Sharp.

Castle’s men followed up last Saturday’s 1-0 league win at Hertfordshire rivals Potters Bar Town with a narrow 3-1 home defeat to Championship side Watford in the Herts Senior Cup on Tuesday night.

Despite losing out to the Vicarage Road side, the Crows battled valiantly for the entire 90 minutes and Castle now has a dilemma before the league resumes at the weekend.

Castle told the Crow: “I have been happy with the showings from the lads in the last two games and know it is down to me now to pick the right team for Saturday.

“For starters, the goalkeepers, Dominic Russo gave me a clean sheet last Saturday, and now Ron Yates has just come in and there’s competition there straight away.

“In the back four, Dave Theobald has come in and done well and we have still got Spyros Mentis, Conor Kilgannon and George Powell to come back in there so I will have to decide on them.

“Going forward, we have Stuart Bridges to return to the side as well so picking the side for Godalming will not be easy.”

One man likely to retain his spot in the side is scorer of Royston’s only goal against the Hornets, Kaan Fehmi.

The striker has notched eight league goals so far this campaign and with Royston looking to edge further towards the league summit, he will be vital to their promotion plans.

Castle said: “Kaan has been an asset for us this season whenever we have been able to get him out on the pitch.

“He has been struggling a little with fitness but when he is fit, he is a real goal threat and that is what we need at a crucial time of the season.”

There may not have been league pride at stake against Watford but Castle and Hornets’ academy coach, Dominic Haynes, an understudy to the current Royston boss at St Albans City several seasons ago, were talking up their respective side’s chances in the build-up to the game.

Castle continued: “Dom’s a great lad and having managed him down at St. Albans City and him having spent time up here (Royston) as a player, we had been texting quite a lot before the game.

“Fair play to him and his side. They did well and came out the victors so no arguments from me.

“He has a great opportunity at Watford. They are a great club and I wish him all the best in this cup and beyond.”
