Over 200 riders descended on the BMX race track in Burns Road Royston on Sunday for the East Anglia Championships being hosted by the Royston Rockets BMX racing club.

The event is the final date on the summer race calendar and is open to riders from around the country although the coveted 01 Regional Champion plate is awarded to the first East Region rider home in each of the 30 race categories.

The Royston BMX Club had 27 members entered for the event.

Unlike a normal regional series round this event does not have novice classes so it was straight into the Expert categories starting off with the 6 and unders where Dominic Hines took fifth place in the class A final and eighth place went to Frankie Minton-Lee.

In the 7yr class Riley Nicholls also took fifth place. In the 9yr group the Rockets had four riders with Josh Abbott taking seventh in the class A final and in the class B final Oliver Dwyer finished fourth with Luca Taylor taking seventh in his first major regional race.

Marco D’Alessandro was just behind in eighth.

The male 10yr class saw three Rockets on track with Josh Izzard taking fifth in the A final and in the B final Harry Evans finished first with Christopher Davies in third.

The 12yr class saw three more Rockets battling for points with Bradley Marvel in a fine third in the in the A final with Louis Foreman in seventh and in the B final Joshua Richarsdon-Game took fourth.

In the 13yr class James King battled to the line to grab second place with team mate Matt Melross in sixth. In the class B final Andrew Shinn took the win.

The 14yr class saw another battle for podium places with Daniel Blanche finishing second and Oliver Sallows fifth. In the 15yr class Richard Chennells finished sixth in his first regional standard event and in the Masters (30+) category Richard Townsend took second.

Representing the girls in the 9-10yr class, Louise Shinn took a well-deserved win in the class B final and in 11-12yr category Ella Tomsett finished second.

Alyx Foreman took fourth in the 15-16yr class. Claire Pollard took third in the Women’s Cruiser 30+ class with Laura Russell in seventh.

In the male Ccuiser classes Daniel Blanche took third place in the 13-14s and Robert Haynes took eighth in the 40+ category.

The East Anglia Regional Winter Series starts on September 28 and is being hosted by the Peterborough BMX Club.

This is the first of six rounds that will run through until next March and with different classes to the summer regional and national series the riders will get to race against different people at each round.
