Royston back on track

Harpenden 0 Royston 3 ROYSTON stunned fourth-place Harpenden on Saturday. The visitors controlled the first half, and took the lead when Owen Russell fired past the Harpenden keeper. Soon after, Royston increased their lead with a goal from Nick Ross. Following the break the home team pushed to get into the game, but were met by a resolute Royston defence. Harpenden's only chance to score was from a short corner that Pete Belcher cleared off the line. After containing Harpenden for most of the second half, Royston took a three-goal lead from a counter attack finished off by Nick Hurd. It was a strong Royston display, which was welcome after some disappointing results of late. Royston II 0 Luton 4 THE long anticipated game against rivals Luton took place at Bassingbourn, and for the second week running, the Royston defence leaked four goals. With a new-look midfield, Royston started the game brightly. However within 10 minutes captain Matt Allsopp was forced off with a recurrence of his hamstring injury. He was quickly followed in the treatment room by Tim Gass, after he unwisely decided to use his ankle to stop the ball. Royston struggled to put any cohesive moves together, as Luton took a tight grip on the game. Few chances were created, in spite of tireless work up front by Chris Berry and Chris Leach. The whole Royston team struggled to get to grips with the pace of the game, and it was no surprise when Luton took the lead. Three more goals followed as the visitors strode to a comfortable victory. Royston must do better to be sure that they do not get sucked in to the relegation battle. This Saturday they take on Winchmore Hill - who they lost to 5-1 at home before Christmas - and the whole team must look to step up a gear to get a result.
