THERE were mixed results for Bassingbourn in their two Cambridge & District League Division One games last week.

A disappointing result against Great Shelford saw Bassingbourn only collect two of the seven points, but an emphatic win against title rival Chesterton has put them in pole position in the table.

Against Shelford, Bassingbourn's rink one team of Jamie Stewart, Toni Infanti and Ian Stewart ran out 16-11 winners, while their rink two side of Joe Cipullo, Sid Manning and Bill Manley romped to a 26-8 win.

That was as good as it got for Bassingbourn, though, as their rink three side were hammered 28-5 and their rink four side went down 17-15 to give Shelford a 64-62 win.

The following night saw a much better result as Bassingbourn ignored the heavy rain to beat Chesterton 79-39.

Anne Brown, Infanti and Ian Stewart set the tone by winning 23-5 on rink two, and rink three saw Bassingbourn fight back from 13-10 down to win 19-13.

Ron Ingrey had a good night at lead on rink four as his side swept to a 21-10, and the win was completed by a 16-11 win on the final rink to give Bassingbourn all seven points and a healthy lead at the top of the table,

- In the previous week's action, Bassingbourn suffered a shock 77-52 loss against basement side Melbourn.

Joe Cipullo, Sid Manning and Ken Clark were up against a strong Melbourn side on rink two.

The early ends were shared but then Melbourn put together four good ends which gave them a lead of nine shot lead, and they held on to record a comfortable 20-12 win.

On rink three, Bassingbourn had a bad start with Melbourn fluking three shots on end three.

After this however Don Laing and Toni Infanti tended to build up heads that favored Bassingbourn.

Ian Stewart at skip then added to these heads or when necessary drove out Melbourns holding shots, as Bassingbourn won 19-10.

Don Slater, Ken Cleaver and Bill Manley on rink five had a game where every point had to be fought for all night.

It was a night when none of the bowlers performed to a standard that they are capable of. Bassingbourn were only in the lead once all night and that was after the first end.

Trailing 8-2 after eight ends cleaver took over as skip, and helped his side recover the deficit to tie 13-13.

On rink six Ron Ingrey, Dave Lester and Andy Brown had a torrid time. They did not bowl at their best but end after end saw the rubs, wicks and edges go Melbourns way.

Almost unbelievably Bassingbourn only won five ends all night as Melbourn finished especially strongly winning 17 shots on the last five ends to run up a 33-9 victory.

Melbourn won the match with 5.5 points while Bassingbourn only picked up 1.5 points. On this form it is difficult to see why Melbourn are at the bottom of the table.
