Chris Watters believes Royston Town’s renewed focus has come just at the right time as the season ticks past the halfway stage.

Town saw off struggling Aylesbury United 4-1 in Southern League Division One Central at Garden Walk last Saturday to register back-to-back wins for the first time since mid-November, having beaten St Ives Town on Boxing Day.

The victory saw the Crows remain in the top four and, with two games in hand and only six points adrift of leaders Chalfont St Peter, Royston’s player-assistant manager feels the title is still anyone’s for the taking.

Watters told the Crow: “I couldn’t fault the lads at all against Aylesbury.

“We were professional in our approach, especially in the poor conditions in the first half and took our chances when they came along.

“In other games like, for example, at Leighton Town back in November, we created 20 chances just to take one which isn’t really good enough and we got out of jail in the end in that one [Liam McDevitt scored an 89th minute winner for 2-1].

“In the second half they pressed us harder but we were clinical with our limited chances again.

“I have seen a great deal of professionalism over the past three weeks and it’s giving us a good chance.

“No team has taken the league by the scruff of the neck this season so it’s all up for grabs and we have to continue our current good form and make ourselves the team to beat.”

Royston have been handed a further boost with quicksilver winger Rhys Hoenes, who has notched 14 goals in 28 games this campaign, rejecting a move to an un-named Southern Premier side in order to commit his future to the club until the end of the season.

With Hoenes staying put, Watters feels the club have more than enough in the dressing room to prosper.

He continued: “Rhys’ performances this season had brought interest from other teams but he’s decided to stay.

“If it had been a significant step up in divisions then I think he would have considered it but he’s enjoying his football here and didn’t see the need to move on.

“He’s a player that can change a game for us so quickly, just like he did at AFC Rushden & Diamonds when he got a hat-trick.

“Our strikers are firing again at the moment so with keeping Rhys we’ve got one of the best frontlines in the division.”
