Reed triumph in tennis tournament

YOUNG tennis players competed in the Royston Primary Schools Tournament last week.
A total of 36 players from nine different schools in the Royston area showed there racket skills in the successful event which was sponsored by North East Herts School Sports Partnership.
Matt Fellingham and Christine Knight of Royston Tennis Club hosted and ran the tournament on the Meridian School Courts assisted by sports leaders from Meridian School.
Barley, Barkway, Icknield Walk, Reed, Roman Way, St. Marys, Studlands Rise, Tannery Drift and Therfield all took part with Reed running out winners overall.
Studlands were runners-up while Icknield and St Marys were third and fourth respectively.
These four teams progress through to the partnership final which will be held on June 9, against the winners of the Buntingford Schools Tournament.
Meanwhile, in the Cambs League, Royston Ladies Is of Pru Burton, Christine Knight, Kathy Betts and Sue Addison lost their first match of the season 5-3 away to Risbygate.
The Men’s Is of Andy Holmes, John Goodbody, Richard Fosbeary and Mike Moss drew away to Cambridge IVs while the Men’s IIs of John Holmes, Alan Knight, John Goodbody and David Addison beat Histon IIIs 6-2.
The junior under-12 team of James Lee, Gareth Byles, Edward Sclare and George Pemberton trounced Rye Park away 12-0.
