REED Cricket Club held their 50th annual meeting last week, and is already gearing up for the new 2006 season. Once again Simon Jackson will Captain the 1st XI but he will, this year, be supported by a new vice-captain, James Heslam. Heslam will also take on the role of midweek captain, hoping to win the Keatley Cup for a record fourth year in succession. The second team captaincy changes hands, with John Heslam standing down after seven years to be replaced by Jason Archer. Archer now passes on the Sunday XI captaincy to first team opening batsman Tom Fulk. On a most significant note, Reed are to run a Saturday Herts League third team for the first time in the club's 50 year history. Captain Simon Jackson described the move as "a major step forward" and emphasised how he hoped it would particularly help in "developing younger players into adult cricket". At the same time he hopes the expansion will attract new players to the club by providing more opportunities of competitive cricket for the club membership. Reed have just started their winter nets and are very keen to welcome new players of all abilities to come along and hopefully join up for the new 2006 season. Sessions are being held from 8-9pm at The Knights Templar Sports Centre in Baldock.
