Red-hot Pepper sets Royston on their way

ROYSTON are through to the third round of the Inter Club Team 10 competition after a comprehensive victory at Hitchin Town.

In the singles, Brian Pepper got Royston off to a good start by winning 21-8, while in the pairs, Matt Coppen and Peter Adams lost by just two shots.

In the triples, Don Sheriff, Mel Flack and Stewart Brown managed a solid 21-13 win, and in their fours Stan Whitehouse, Keith Dockree, Laurie Ramsay, and Mike O'Flanagan got home by just one shot to give Royston a 3-1 win.

Royston ladies reached the next round of the Ladies Top Club Competition beating Hatfield.

In the singles, Yvonne Whitehouse had a comfortable 21-13 win, while in the pairs Linda O'Flanagan and Shirley Pawson held their nerve in a tight game and claimed a four-shot win.

In the triples, Eileen Sheriff, Pam Keating and Evelyn Huffer coasted home 22-11. In the fours Beryl Huckle, Gillian Fisk, Eileen Hyde and Eunice Dockree struggled and Hatfield ran out 24-9 winners. Overall Royston won 72 shots to 63 and 3-1 on rinks.

Don Sheriff and Peter Adams had a comfortable 21-10 win over Shire Park in the National Over 55s tournament.

Linda O'Flanagan and Shirley Pawson beat Baldock by 18 shots to register a 32-14 victory.

After an impressive run of victories, Royston lost to Garston in the Men's Top 11 league. Brian Pepper lost his singles match by one shot, and Mick O'Flanagan also lost his four-wood singles match. Despite playing well in the pairs, Sean Young and Bob Porter lost their game 20-14.

In the triples Terry Hollands, Simon Lee, and Stewart Brown had a three-shot win. The fours also won their game, with Peter Adams, Stan Whitehouse, Keith Dockree and Don Sheriff playing well for a 17-12 win.

n NEWLY-promoted Coton visited Bassingbourn in the Cambridge and District league Division 1. Don Laing, Dave Lester and Graham Parrish dropped only one shot all night, and ran out 36-1 winners.

Ken Clark, Andy Brown, and Jamie Stewart were also in top form. Despite Coton staying in close contact for the first eight ends, Bassingbourn were never under pressure and won 21-8 .

After a long absence Joe Cipullo returned to action and got straight back into his rhythm. Cipullo, with Sid Manning and Bill Manley, looked in complete command until they reached 13 on end 13 (13-3), where Coton had a revival of fortunes and picked up a four and a three.

This produced a nervous couple of ends, but Bassingbourn managed to seal a victory with a four on end 17 to get home 18-15.

Anne Brown, Toni Infanti, and Ian Stewart teamed up against a good Coton triple and despite leading all night struggled to pull away from their opponents. Starting the last end 15-12 ahead, the skips came to bowl , and Coton were soon holding one.

Coton's skip then added two more with his three woods. However, Stewart rescued the tie with his last wood and Bassingbourn finished fortunate 16-12 winners.

Overall it was a very comfortable 91-50 win and another valuable seven points were secured, to leave Bassingbourn at the top of the table.

n STEEPLE Morden hosted an open triples competition, with 24 teams taking part.

Trumpington BC and Arista competed in the final , with Trumpington coming out winners and collecting the prize money.

Arista who play in the Stevenage Business Houses League did very to achieve their runners-up spot. North Herts BC finished third, with Chesterton fourth after a play-off.
