BASSINGBOURN Village College student Alex Raine started the new season in fine style by sealing a place on a national development scheme.

The 14-year-old will get the opportunity to hone his skills under the guidance of some of the country's top coaches on the new English National Development Programme.

The Bassingbourn youngster will also study psychology and nutrition during the three-day placement in Norwich.

Raine shone at county and regional championships this year, and featured in relay races at the national championships in Sheffield - alongside another Bassingbourn Village College student, 14-year-old Ellie Mason.
