Steve Castle wouldn’t be too displeased if his Royston Town became the dullest team in Southern League Division One Central in the remainder of the season as long as they secure promotion.

The Crows saw off bottom-half Fleet Town 2-1 on Saturday, thanks to goals from hot-shot Simon Thomas, his fifth goal in five games, and substitute Ryan Towner, a result that leaves them fourth with 12 games remaining.

Now at the business end of the campaign, Town find themselves five points off the summit but with three games in hands on leaders AFC Rushden & Diamonds, so a few tedious wins to increase their title chances would leave Town’s boss more than happy.

Castle said: “As per the time of year and importance of the game, the result is the priority and we achieved what we wanted to at Fleet.

“They have had a mixed season but we knew it would it would be a tough game with the long journey and their sticky pitch taking a while to adjust to.

“We ground it out though and the only disappointment on the day was their late goal which blotted the backline’s copybook.”

He added: “We want to be the boring team that keeps churning out three points week in, week out.

“It will be tight until the end. It seems that there is another twist in the league every week. The good news for us is that it’s in our own hands at the moment.”

Royston now host Beaconsfield SYCOB this Saturday before second-bottom Leighton Town visit Garden Walk on Tuesday and Castle knows the pressure is on to deliver two expected results.

He continued: “We should be full of confidence and bar Jack Bradshaw, we have got a full-strength and quality squad. People think we’ll win these games easily but it’s not always that simple.”

Those numbers have been boosted by the signings of former St Albans City man Ryan Frater and Martel Powell, from Ryman Premier Division side Wingate & Finchley.

Frater is yet to make his Crows debut after joining a fortnight ago but Powell played 62 minutes in last Saturday’s victory.

Castle said: “With a change in management at Wingate, Martel found himself wanting a different team and through Chris [Watters - player-assistant manager] he asked to come down to prove himself to us which we were happy to oblige with.”
