Perfect ten for Royston

Royston Town Vets 10 Sandy Vets 2

TOWN celebrated their last home game of the season in style with a thumping 10-2 win of Sandy Vets.

The home side started strongly and pressure on the visitors defence forced the goalie into a poor clearance that Peter Leete latched onto and slotted home.

Sandy were playing good football as usual with ex Luton Town player Lil Fucillo prompting from the midfield and it was he who created an opening for their centre forward to lob Merv Chaffey in the Town goal for the equaliser.

After 15 minutes Kevin Barthrop replaced the injured Ian Stubbs who was involved in a heavy collision with a Sandy forward and was forced to leave the field.

Town restored their lead with Jason Clarke, in excellent form in midfield, taking the ball on the right and striking an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net.

The hosts went 3-1 up when Paul Lewis was fouled in the penalty area and scored as he sent the keeper the wrong way from the resultant penalty.

Royston continued to dominate the game and deservedly extended their lead with a fine header from Dickie Harris.

Leete and Lewis were causing the opponents' defence all sorts of problems and it was no surprise that both scored again with powerful efforts to take the score into the half-time break at 6-1.

The second half started more evenly with the visitors enjoying rather more of the possession but it was Town who scored again when Paul Lewis ran through and volleyed past the advancing keeper for his hat-trick.

Nick Humphries added number eight from a tap-in following good work by Leete.

Daryl Quinn coolly lobbed the 'keeper for number nine and Town made it 10 when they created an opening on the right for Mark Cowley to slot the ball into the far corner for his first goal for the Vets.

Sandy scored a consolation second goal just before the end but it took nothing away from a scintillating performance by Town to avenge an away defeat earlier in the season.

Foxton 4 Bluntisham 0

FOXTON shook off their defeat from last week with a 4-0 win at home against Bluntisham.

The first half was reasonably even with bottom of the table Bluntisham still showing some enthusiasm and fighting for every ball on a hard and dry pitch.

The home side were well marshalled though by a compact back line lead by captain Ally Flack and the ever consistent Andy Gray. Iain Tokley and Jamie Clark the full backs providing a constant outlet on both sides.

Duncan Handscombe was called into midfield to replace the still injured Barry Webber and he and Chris Aristo formed an effective combination as they started to control the central battle.

Foxton's first goal came from the right hand side, Darren Chamberlain's short pass from a throw found opposite winger Conrad Welsted inside the box, who turned and found Adam Fields in space to finish.

Fields then had another decent chance soon after as again he was found by a Welsted pass but this time the Bluntisham keeper made a good save to deny him.

Foxton scored their second goal straight after the break, the Bluntisham goalkeeper raced out from his line clearing the ball towards the halfway line.

The ball was brought down by Chris Aristo with a pass to Sean Audley, who then struck a first time shot over the keeper into the open net from around 40 yards.

This put the home team in control as they settled into their lead.

Set plays were always a threat and eventually they paid off as an Adam Fields corner hit hard into the box where Sean Audley got ahead of his marker to score with a neat header.

After his two goals Audley then missed the easiest chance of the game as he failed to convert from two yards out as he met a Chris Aristo cross at the far post, which bounced off his shin.

Adam Fields got his reward, scoring Foxton's final goal making it from all his own work, shutting down a Bluntisham defender as he dallied on the ball in the middle of the pitch, then breaking for goal where he coolly slotted past the advancing keeper.

There was still a chance in the last minute for Foxton to increase their lead, Audley rounded a defender inside the Bluntisham box, but instead of passing to an open Adam Fields who was on his hat trick he went for glory on a hat-trick himself and missed high and wide.

The biggest disappointment of the game for Foxton though came as the excellent Welsted just returning to form, aggravated the knee injury which has kept him sidelined all year and now will be ruled out for the rest of the season.

# Foxton are at home again on Saturday where they face Hardwick.

Abington United 2 Steeple Morden 0

STEEPLE were made to pay for their failure to take their chances as they lost a game they dominated on Saturday.

The home side were struggling to cope as Steeple produced waves of attacking football from the start.

The best move was started by Roy Dunsford and Charlie Prothero who put Karl Parr away and his cut back was controlled by leading scorer Ben Holt who turned his man before firing over the bar.

Karl Parr was also guilty of missing opportunities as long throws from Jamie Murphy caused problems for the home defence.

Martin Holt and Roy Dunsford particularly were a constant threat down the wings but the tireless Joe Morris and Ben Holt could not provide the goals Steeple deserved.

With only five minutes of the first half remaining a defensive mix up allowed Abington to take the lead with their first shot of the half.

The heat started to take its toll in the second half and the home side came into the game more.

Steeple were unlucky to concede a second when young centre-half Martin Donald appeared to be pushed as Abington broke away and slotted beyond the unlucky Tim Tidey.

Still Morden pressed and substitute Graham Collins found space in the six- yard box but headed over the bar to add to the frustration.

Even the late introduction of manager Kenny Watters could not prevent Steeple slipping to defeat and sixth spot in the table.
