AS the outdoor bowls season draws to a close, the Letchworth and District finals, held on Saturday at Stevenage Town, were the highlights of the week.

In the morning, Royston's Brian Pepper, standing in for Matt Coppen, and Peter Adams took to the green to confront Steve Kilford and Stewart Cook of the Roebuck Club, Stevenage, in the L&D Pairs final.

At the outset, Kilford and Cook took charge and coasted away to be 24-9 up on the 14th end before the Royston pair started to claw their way back into the game.

Taking the mat up the green and delivering a short jack seemed to throw Kiford and Cook off their stride and allowed their opponents to score 16 shots to their opponents' one over the next few ends.

The result of this three hour match came down to the last wood, and it was Cook who just managed to remove the Royston shot bowl to claim a 26-25 victory.

In the afternoon it was the turn of Len Payne, Mick O'Flanagan, and skip Peter Adams to take on a Whitethorn triple, skipped by Paul Andrews, in the L&D Triples Final.

With the Whitethorn squad winning by 17 shots to 6, one must take into account that the match was over 18 ends to set the performances of both teams into perspective.

Also on Saturday, two Royston teams took to the green in a vice president versus the vice captain contest. With four rinks and two triples, this was a well attended game.

There were several fives and sixes scored on a number of rinks which helped with some of the high scores which were achieved.

Claiming the highest rink for the vice president's team was Derek Goodwin who caused a few eyebrows to be raised when he encouraged his team to out-bowl club president Will Martin by 27-13.

Vice president Shirley Pawson's team triumphed with a 122-113 win against Peter Sizeland's squad.

The club also held a Spoon Drive in aid of the RNLI which was won by Ron Colton with 33 shots. A total of 84 was collected during the day, with the club rounding the total up to 100.
