Royston Town’s Southern League Central Division One promotion hopes were dashed by the dreaded spot kicks as they lost to Barton Rovers at Garden Walk on Tuesday night.

Both sides played out a goalless draw over the 120 minutes and after nine consecutive penalties were slotted away, substitute Rob Nightingale saw his saved by Rovers’ keeper Kyle Forster.

The Crows can feel mightily aggrieved by the final outcome, having put together a 13 game unbeaten run in the closing stages of the regular season.

Barton now go on to face Bedworth United in Monday’s play-off final, after they won 2-1 at Aylesbury.
