Somersham win 7-6 on penalties

FOWLMERE suffered penalty heartache after surrendering a 4-1 lead in their Creake Charity Shield first round match at Somersham.

But head coach Steve Walker was ­reluctant to criticise the referee, who awarded the home side two second half penalties.

"I don't want to blame the ref but those types of decisions can spoil occasions like this," he said.

"Both penalties were debatable, and up to that point we were well in control of the match."

Fowlmere took a 3-1 lead into half-time, thanks to three excellent goals. The first came from Carl Darcy, who found space in the box and finished neatly.

In-form Dan Caley swept in the second from wide on the left, before Danny Mizon kept his cool to sidestep the keeper and make it 3-0.

Although the hosts pulled one back just before the break, an angled shot from ­Fidget restored Fowlmere's three-goal cushion.

Somersham then scored a second, before the two penalties were awarded which took the game into extra time.

With no further goals forthcoming, the match was decided in a shootout, which Somersham won 7-6.

Walker praised stand in keeper Kelly Jones, who made his debut in the game.

"He's kindly helping me out for a couple of weeks, it's a shame he had to face so many penalties on his debut," he added.

Fowlmere are in cup action again this weekend when they host Great Chishall.
