SCOTT Parnell was the toast of Royston Golf club on Sunday when he won the Centenary Trophy with an excellent gross 73, net 68 in testing conditions.

A birdie at the last saw him clinch victory by just a single shot from Matthew Clark, with Pete Prentice a further shot back.

Played alongside the Centenary Trophy final, the Men’s Medal was split into two divisions and countback was required to separate the top three players in Division One. In the end, Simon Thompson took the spoils from Darren Thompson and Mark Bohan, with all three players finishing with a nett 70.

Thompson had the consolation of the best gross score of the day with a round of 73. In Division Two, Alan Evans was the clear winner with a net 67. The 18-handicapper, who had also won the Veterans Centenary Trophy on Friday, cruised to a five-shot victory. Ted Prestbury was second and Mick Joyner third.

The ladies played their Centenary Trophy, also on Sunday, and Jenny Thompson was the clear winner with an excellent round of 72, which has seen her handicap trimmed by two strokes to 20. Sarah Buckefield was runner-up with Carolyn Devaney taking third place.

Mark and Luke bailey won the Family Foursomes on Saturday with a superb score of 38 points. The pair dropped just six strokes to par to ease past the father and son pairing of Tom and Matt McGuigan who finished second with 35.

The club will be hosting its Captain’s Days this weekend and on Saturday over 180 players will be competing for the Captain’s Prize.

Elsewhere, Paul Maslin won the Saturday Stableford with 41 points ahead of Matt Barrett (40) and Richard Howorth (39).
