THE first major cup competition of the year took place at Royston Golf Club, on Sunday.

With the course in top condition and just a hint of a breeze, low scores were the order of the day.

Jack Yetton was the early clubhouse leader with a nett 64 from his five handicap, which was then matched by Robin Smith from his 13 handicap.

But they were both pushed into a tie for second place as Mark Pearson stormed through the field with a nett 63.

His outward nine holes of nine straight pars proved the difference that has seen his handicap trimmed from 11 to nine. Nearly a fifth of the 95 players managed to break par.

In a busy week at the club, past captain John Kelly won the Thursday Medal with a nett 66 from his 12 handicap.

Chris Taylor has reduced his handicap further with a nett 67 and joint- third were Chris Treadwell and Jack Yetton.

The Saturday Medal was won by David Archibald who returned a nett 66, made all the more remarkable after starting with a 10 at his first hole.

Runner-up was Mark Hill (77-9=68) and in joint third were the trio of Steve Gorman (80-11=69), Stuart Phillips (69-0=69) and Jack Yetton (74-5=69).

The juniors competed for the St Neots team trophy, held at St Neots Golf Club. The team of Oli Bance, Chris and Tom Trimble together with Marcus Shipley performed well in the poor weather and finished second of 14 teams.

They also competed in the County knockout competition and, faced with giving away a lot of shots to hosts Old Nene, they were narrowly beaten in all three matches.

The team members were Craig Jackson, Marcus Shipley, Michael and Thomas Clapham, Tom Trimble and James Sandford.
