ROYSTON rally racer Brett Griffin and his team finished in first class in the latest round of the British Rally Championship Challenge and are now in second place in the standings.

The team competed in the Jim Clark International Rally in Kelso, on the Scottish border, which is the only ‘closed roads’ rally on mainland United Kingdom.

The rally was 67 stage miles run over seven stages, with the longest being 15.4 and the shortest 1.2 miles. There were three night stages on the Friday night and the remaining four on the Saturday.

The team posted two eighth fastest times in the first two stages before finishing tenth fastest in the third stage.

The following day, the team managed to record an improved fifth fastest time at Wedderburn before stage five was cancelled due to a big accident involving one of the other racers.

A brake problem, which later on was discovered to have been caused by the brake fluid boiling, ruined Team Griffin’s chances in stage six but another fifth fastest time in the final stage at Swinton meant they won the class by 1.5 seconds.

The next round takes the team to the Isle of Man for the Manx International Rally.
