Royston’s Luke Mossey had a challenging few days at Brands Hatch for round two of the British Superbike Championship.
The JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider started the weekend positively over the shorter Indy circuit, finishing 13th during Saturday’s qualifying session - only one tenth of a second behind his teammate Leon Haslam in fifth.
Race one on Sunday proved difficult for Mossey.
After last year’s heroics at Brands Hatch, which saw him claim his first ever double win, it would be a very different story this time. Mossey was unable to ever feel comfortable during the race and dropped back two places and finished 15th.
It would be an even tougher challenge for Mossey in race two, as he started 15th on the grid.
He worked his way up into 13th, however, due to rain the race was given a red flag and when restarted would be fought out over a shortened 22-lap race.
When racing got back underway conditions were still damp and Mossey challenged as best as he could, however he came home in 13th place, as teammate Halsam won his first race of the season.
Speaking after the race, Mossey said: “It was a really tough weekend, we made a lot of changes but I was struggling to feel comfortable and confident.
“I went with the wrong tyres in race one and I know now it wasn’t the right thing to do – but we had to try something.
“We made some changes between races and I decided to run the softer tyre in race two.
“I was feeling a little more confident and then the red flag came out.
“The team worked hard to change the settings and I know the result didn’t reflect it, but the bike felt really good and I was able to push pretty hard.”
The focus will now turn to round three at Oulton Park on May 5 to 7 and it’s already firmly in Mossey’s mind.
“We will do some testing before Oulton and I hope to get back to the sharp end where we belong,” he said.
Mossey sits 10th in the BSB championship table, 56 points behind leader Bradley Ray from Buildbase Suzuki.
However, there is still plenty to race for and closing the gap will be Mossey’s goal.
