JONATHAN Osler won the Club Championship at Royston Golf Club on Sunday. The one-handicapper posted an excellent score of 145 to win the 36-hole scratch competition.
The morning round was played in cold, windy conditions and Osler trailed the early leader James Smith by four shots after his 75, which saw him bogey the last three holes. Smith, by comparison, birdied two of his last three holes to lead the field.
The wind abated in the afternoon and with the weather warming up, so was the golf, with a host of birdies.
Osler led the way with a magnificent 70 to take the title by five shots.
His nearest challengers were Peter Prentice (80+70=150) and Adam Woods (77+73=150). Smith, however, dropped back with a barrage of bogeys to eventually finish fifth.
The Single Figure Cup, played in conjunction with the Club Championship, was won by Keith Jest. The eight-handicapper produced nett rounds of 71 and 64 to win by a massive seven shots from Prentice, Woods and Jason Nolan. Jest played the final nine holes in one under par – a remarkable performance as he has only played a few times this year.
The single stableford, also played on Sunday, was won by Andy Ball with a tremendous 39 points, which has seen his handicap trimmed to 16. Runners-up with 38 were Martin Walker, Simon Elliott and Stewart Hunt.
The Ladies Medal and Buckerfield Trophy was played on Saturday and Jenny Thompson took the spoils with a beautifully crafted nett 72. Some steady golf saw the 25-handicapper win by two shots from Pam Bonnett. Linda Laket continues to impress with a third place finish.
Charlie Fidler (79-14=65) won the Men’s Medal on Wednesday followed by Adrian Shoebridge (68) and Danny Crotty (70).
In Thursday’s Men’s Medal, Andy Ball (85-12=73) took the honours followed by Glenn Bowles (73) and Neil van der Merwe (73).
