THE sun shone for president Linda O’Flanagan on Saturday, for the opening day of Royston Bowls Club, summer season, celebrating its 85th year.

The club house was crowded with players, established and new, ready to enjoy a Spoon-Drive followed by a buffet tea contributed by club members. The Spoon Drive, a series of short games, with players competing against each other for the highest score, was won by last year’s president, Peter Fisk, who was presented with an elegant Royston Bowls Club Spoon.

Each year the newly-elected president chooses a charity for which to raise money, and Linda explained this year’s charity would be The Red Balloon, supporting those children who cannot cope with the pressures caused by bullying. Funds raised from the Spoon Drive, Spider (nearest bowl to the head of a plastic spider placed strategically in the middle of the green) and raffle totalled 223 – an excellent start to her campaign.

On Sunday the fine weather allowed bowlers to again practise their skills, this time raising 85 to support the Partially Blind Bowlers Association. Additional monies for this cause will be raised later in the year.

Anyone interested in joining the Club based in Green Drift will be more than welcome at any time.
