Royston’s junior member continues good form
ROYSTON Golf Club junior member Robbie Norman battled his way to win the Vernon Putting Cup on Saturday, after seeing off 23 other hopefuls in the final round.
Norman will now have his name not only engraved on the Vernon Trophy, but also added to the winners’ board in the clubhouse, something few members have achieved at such a young age.
Over recent weeks, Norman has been playing well for the Royston Junior Team, and during the club’s visit to St Ives he won his game one-up. Captain Luke Bailey and his team of Robert Brain, Emily Smith and Ryan Sharp all won their games. And back at Royston, during a match with St Neots, Sam Chipperfield, Norman, Bailey Brain, Sharp and Guy Curtis were all victorious.
Meanwhile, junior, James Moore, showed the adults a clean pair of heels in the Saturday Stableford beating his nearest rival by four points. He scored a majestic 43 points off his 26 handicap to win, ahead of 12-handicapper Stewart Hart on 39 and Alan Evans also on 39, with Stuart Knight in finishing fourth on 35.
In the Senior July Stableford Ken Ayre won with 37 points ahead of Keith Wood and Doug Moule both on 34 and Stuart Knight on 32 in fourth place.
The Royston Ladies have also been busy recently with their Twilight Competition and Centenary Trophy. In the Twilight event the Silver Division prize went to Sarah Buckerfield and the Bronze prize to Linda Lakey. The Centenary Trophy was won by Jenny Thompson with a brilliant nett 72 while Buckerfield came a close second with a nett 77 off her seven-handicap in atrocious conditions. The Ladies’ July Medal was won by Alice Lewis with a net 70 ahead of Linda Lakey, Josie Seward, and Marjory Humphreys.
The final play off of the Bogey Cup was won by Bridget Long from Marjory Humphreys and the Grannies’ Rose Bowl play-off was won by Lyn Barker from Pam Bonnett.
