YOUNG bowler Matt Coppen came through a tough first round encounter with Roebuck's Steve Kilford to reach the next round of the Champion of Champions.

In a close game early on, Coppen upped the tempo and pulled away in the second half to win 21-13.

Beryl Huckle, Eileen and Don Sheriff, and skip Stewart Brown competed in the National Mixed Fours against Whitehorn of Letchworth, and led Royston to a 21-10 victory.

Elsewhere, skip Charles Gifford led his side to a 31-11 victory over Bishop's Stortford in a four-rink friendly. Overall, Royston beat Stortford 79-54.

Letchworth & District Bowling Association also came to Royston for a friendly triples game. And it was more success for Royston as they won on five rinks, easing home 107-61.

It was also good news for Royston Vets, who played a five- rink mixed triples against Three Horseshoes of Stevenage.

Royston lost only one rink, and romped to a 36-shot victory, 94-58.
