Cambridge United's recent unbeaten run has to come to an end with a 1-0 defeat at Crawley Town on Saturday. In a scrappy first half, the U's spurned two good chances to take the lead through first Jon Brady, then Jamie Guy, who has returned from Colchester United to continue his work experience. Crawley scored their goal from a corner 10 minutes into the second half, poor defending at a corner kick allowing defender Chris Giles to loop a header over 'keeper Scott Howie and into the back of the net. Things got worse for the U's when Rob Wolleaston was sent off on 70 minutes, the experienced midfielder picking up a needless second yellow card for arguing with the referee over the award of a corner to Crawley. After the game manager Rob Newman declared himself "very, very disappointed" to lose the game, saying: "I don't think we showed enough responsibility and discipline out there today to deal with Crawley's threat...This just goes to show that there's a lot to be done and a lot to be changed for next season." In other news, United's Stadium Manager Ian Darler has been nominated for the FA Groundsman of the Year awards. The nomination is Ian's sixth in 11 years and is even more noteworthy because of the lack of funding available this year. The results should be announced in May. United's next game is at home to Morecambe on Saturday April 1st; they play another home game just three days later against Exeter City on Tuesday April 4th.
