ROYSTON Rugby Club chairman David Gee described last weekend's action as "momentous" - as his club managed to field three senior teams and add another junior title.

He said: "On Saturday, the club fielded three senior teams, which has not happened for a long time.

"This shows that the squad is rising - which is a good thing.

"We won't be able to do this every week, but we are heading in that direction and if we can add some more senior players we should be able to schedule three matches a week.

"Despite all three of the teams losing, the first team going down 26-7 to Cheshunt, each game was very close in what was a good display of rugby.

"And they showed their strength of character in the way they battled hard to limit the opposition."

The first team lost at home to in-form league leaders Cheshunt, while the seconds lost by a couple of points against St Neots thirds in one of the lowest scoring games ever seen at the Heath.

And despite a strong performance, the vets made it a hat-trick of defeats, losing their match against a youthful Stevenage side.

Gee said: "The results didn't go our way, and Cheshunt's forwards certainly showed their class in the first team game.

"They were effective in controlling the game and they spoiled our possession. However, Royston dug deep and played an impressive defensive game when perhaps other clubs may have folded and succumbed to a cricket score."

Gee also praised the club's youth set up, with Royston's mini teams adding to the recent success of its under-sevens and eights.

He said: "On Sunday we had yet another spectacular set of results - with the mini teams travelling to Haverhill for a three-way tournament that also included Witham.

"Royston again showed their class with a spectacular demonstration of mini rugby and came back unbeaten which once again underscores the strength of youth rugby at the club.

"Although we're a relatively small club, we are proving to be one of the strongest clubs in the region and are building a formidable reputation.

"The club is fortunate to have an excellent team of coaches in our youth rugby section and this coupled with the superb support of parents and volunteers, and the wonderful spirit within the club is all part of the mix that is enabling our success."

Last month the under-sevenss and eights roared to a clean sweep of trophies at the Cambridge Cup in Ely. Their impressive display has resulted in an invitation by Northampton Saints for a demonstration game of tag rugby, which will take place at Franklin Gardens before Northampton's game against Coventry on Saturday, November 24.

Gee said: "I'm very proud and as chairman it's difficult to express the amount of pride that we have at the club this season."

- As the club's youth set up continues to go from strength-to-strength, youngsters of all ages and abilities are welcome at Royston Rugby Club.

The club is also hoping to increase the membership of its female players of all ages.
