ROYSTON BMX Racing Club had varying success at the two opening rounds of the 2010 National BMX summer calendar in Cheddar at the weekend.

One rider went down with food poisoning while another injured himself even before the event started.

The racing attracted over 560 riders from across the UK and a few from outside of the country who had travelled to race on one of the best tracks in Europe. Round One of the Series was held on Saturday afternoon and evening while Sunday morning and afternoon saw the riders competing in round two.

The racing was close, fast and very competitive and Royston's youngest rider at the event, James King, who competed in the nine-year-old class, just failed to make the semi finals on both days while in the 10-year-old class Daniel Blanche took second in the B final on Saturday and Sunday with Myles Fisher in his first national event taking seventh in Saturday's A final and winning the class B final on Sunday.

Ethan Vernon took second in the A final on both days to get his national title challenge of to a flying start.

In the 11year-old class, Aaron Dalleywater was only able to attend on the Saturday but took points for a third placed finish in the A final and in the 14's, James Handleigh took second in Saturday's B final but qualified for the A final on Sunday where he finished in eighth.

Also taking part in his first National Series event, Andrew Brooker in the 16-year-old class just failed to make the semi finals on Saturday but improved on Sunday to qualify for the class B final where he took eighth.

The final rider for the Rockets was Richard Townsend competing in the "Masters" class where he finished with fifth in Saturday's B final and eighth in Sunday's A final.

The Rockets are running their regular Tuesday night sessions from 6.00pm until dark and will be out in force at the second round of the East Anglia Region Summer Series on May 9, at Codham Park.

Full details of forthcoming club and regional events will be published soon on the club web site at www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more information on BMX racing.
