Luke Mossey says he wants to keep improving next season after finishing sixth in the 2016 British Superbikes Championship.

The Royston rider had a tough time at the final round of the competition at Brands Hatch, taking 13th in the first race before securing 10th in the second and ninth in the third and final race.

With that he finished 18 points off fifth-placed Jason O’Halloran in the standings but toasted a great year on his Kawasaki ZX-10R.

Mossey said: “It was a tough weekend with lots of stops and starts, weather changes, track problems and I didn’t want to do anything stupid and end up in the medical centre.

“I’ve had a great season and made progress in the last year.

“It was great to get into the final showdown and it’s been quite an emotional year.

“I love being part of the championship and also the Quattro team. They have been brilliant and I can’t put it into words how grateful I am for their help.

“The season was great and next year I want to keep improving and moving forward.”

The 24-year-old began the opening race third on the grid but went wide at one corner and was eighth by the end of the first lap.

Team-mate Filip Backlund crashed out at Hawthorns on the fourth lap and called for the red flag to come out.

As three laps had been completed, there was a restart and Mossey began in ninth of the third row of the grid.

There was another red flag incident soon after and the race was started for a third time and reduced to just 15 laps.

Mossey struggled in the twice-restarted race and could not climb the leaderboard. The conditions were terrible and he could only bring his bike home in 13th.

Just as the riders were preparing to start the first race on Sunday, race control declared a wet race.

Even though the rain wasn’t falling, the track was damp. Mossey found himself down in 15th after the first lap, but he battled through the pack to finish 10th.

The sun came out for the final race of the season.

Mossey started the race in 12th.

On the fourth lap James Rispoli, on the Anvil Hire Yamaha, had a technical problem and his bike was in flames causing the red flag to come out and the race to be stopped.

It took over an hour for the track to be cleared of oil at which point the race committee chose for it to be a 10-lap race.

Mossey fought hard again and battled all the way through but was only able to finish ninth.
