Melbourn 2 West Wratting Reserves 4 DESPITE another good team performance, Melbourn still seek an elusive first victory of the season. Melbourn actually took the lead very early on. Following a good move down the right, a cross was flicked on by Stephen Edwards and Russell Cooper smashed home an unstoppable volley from 12 yards. Wratting equalised soon after and then took the lead with a fortuitous goal, when experienced striker Richard Wilson got a shot away from a prone position which took two deflections before creeping in just inside the post. The visitors grabbed a third in the second half, Wilson flicked on a corner at the near post, and a team mate headed home unchallenged at the far post. Wratting put the tie beyond doubt with a fourth, after a cross from the right deceived keeper Chris Paxton and went in off an upright. As time ran out, Melbourn pulled another back when Tom Walker almost broke the net with a thunderous drive from the edge of the box, but it was but a mere consolation. Melbourn: C Paxton, T Walker, S Carse, J Heslam, A Edwards, E Chapman, J Gray, M Wagstaff, F Lury, S Edwards (S Marriott), R Cooper. - Melbourn entertain high-flying neighbours Barrington on Saturday. Banyers 2 Fulbourn Rovers 2 BANYERS lost ground on leaders Hardwick with a draw at home to Fulbourn. It was a tail of two halves, the wind being a main part of the equation. Fulbourn had the wind behind them in the first half and were 1-0 up early on following a blunder by Banyers' keeper. Adrian Pigg sliced his clearance to the attacker, who from 30 yards out calmly placed the ball back over the keeper's head and into the net. Soon after it was 2-0. A cross from the right found Glenn Radford, who could only clear a weak header to a striker, whose cross along the six-yard box was met with a diving header from a yard out. It took a lot of character from Banyers not to let their heads drop. Barry Wood was being kept quiet by the centre backs, and was not allowed a single chance in the first half. The hosts' only chance fell to Dave Ratcliffe at the near post, following Steve Cawdell's cross, but this was blocked by a defender. With the wind behind them, Banyers were a different team in the second half and dominated from the start. They pulled one back early on. Adam Smith's effort was well saved by the keeper, but Wood was there to pounce at the rebound, smacking the ball off the keeper's legs and bouncing into the top corner. Wood returned the favour soon after, swinging in a corner that was met by Smith at the back post, who finished easily. Both teams had their chances to win at the death. Another corner for Banyers found a Fulbourn defender's head, but his back header narrowly missed the upright. A free kick from Fulbourn also curled agonisingly close, but over the bar. Banyers: A Pigg, G Radford, M Halfacre, A Smith, N Smith, S Cawdell, S Paul, D Rice, D Ratcliffe, R Barlow, B Wood. Subs: S Easy, P Matthews.
