Melbourn Squash Club round-up

MELBOURN Squash Club IIs were relegated from the Cambs Division Three league last week after losing 16-9 to promotion winners Hunts County IIIs.

The opening matches saw Kate Bradshaw (two) overwhelmed by her opponent’s power as she went down 3-0, while Matt Walker (four) played his usual composed squash to win 3-0.

When Skipper Colin Taylor (five) won the second and third games of his match on tie-breaks, simultaneously with Steve Durrant (three) being two games ahead on the other court, an upset seemed possible. However, this was as close as Melbourn got, as Taylor’s opponent fought back to win 3-2. Durrant’s lead also slipped away, before he dug out a 3-2 win.

Jan Brynjolffssen (one) battled valiantly in losing 3-1, taking the third game on a tie-break, but eventually his opponent proved too good.

The result meant the IIs still had a flicker of hope of escaping relegation – however Comberton IIs secured enough points in their match against Melbourn Is two days later to ensure they sent the IIs down.

The Is won the match 17-4, but injury-stricken Michael Easton (five) suffered a 3-0 loss in the first match.

Les Stockley (four), Dan Easton, Ian Blows (two) and Mark Oppen (one)all proved too strong for their opponents as Melbourn cruised to victory and secured a fourth place finish this season.

Melbourn Ladies completed their Division One campaign at Cambridge Squash Club last week losing 17-5 with Katie Bradshaw (one) getting Melbourn’s only win with a perfect 14-0 in her match.
