Melbourn Dynamos FC are celebrating cup success after a double dose of penalty drama.

At the Royston Crow Youth Football League U9 tournament, hosted by the club on Saturday, Dynamos Panthers made it to the final of the 32-team tournament where they faced Stevenage Borough Inter.

Stevenage took the lead in the first half but Dynamos fought back to grab a second-half equaliser.

With the scores remaining 1-1 after extra-time, a penalty shoot-out was required to find a winner.

The Dynamos keeper made an outstanding save in the shoot-out, making it 3-3, and with their fifth and final spot-kick, Melbourn wrapped up the win.

Manager Peter Allison said: “I’m so proud, all the hard work carried out by everyone makes this all worthwhile, the boys were excellent.”

Dynamos’ other U9 side, the Tigers, made it to the semi-finals of the competition.

Club chairman Blake Carrington said: “This was an excellent result against some very strong opposition.”

The tournament was also a huge success off the field.

The café, staffed by volunteers, served 500-600 visitors and raised nearly £2,000. That windfall will fund the club’s presentation day and enable it to be a free event.

The Dynamos’ U13 team pulled off victory in the same thrilling fashion in Cambridge and District Colts League’s Paul Lucking Invitation Cup on Saturday, an event which recognises teams which have conducted themselves well throughout the season.

A last-gasp equaliser kept Dynamos’ hopes alive in the final and they too prevailed in a test of nerves of a penalty shoot-out.

It was the perfect way to mark the end of the reign of coaches Andy Locking and Sam Carrington.

Carrington said: “The boys have enjoyed another fantastic season and all their hard work was rewarded by winning their second piece of silverware in the last two seasons.

The club would like to hear from anyone who would be willing to help the team build on its success by coaching next season.

There was yet more good news for Dynamos, even in a defeat.

The club’s U16 girls hosted Sutton Rangers in their final league game of the season.

In their opening match of the campaign, Dynamos had lost 22-0 to the same opponents.

This time they went down 1-0, but only after hitting the bar twice and proving how much they had improved over the last few months.
