MELBOURN sealed promotion to Division 1A courtesy of goals from Andrew Morris and Jason Gray.

A concrete-like surface and windy conditions made it difficult at times to control the ball, but Melbourn's endeavour to achieve promotion saw them control the game for long periods with the home side winning just two corners throughout the 90 minutes.

With Kris Watters chasing the all-time Melbourn scoring record of 50 goals for a season, the visitors struggled to find the back of the net despite a number of clear chances.

However, the deadlock was broken after 30 minutes when Morris, intercepting the ball wide on the right, ran all of 60 yards and just when it looked like he'd square the ball the home keeper seemed to step aside for Morris to simply slot the ball home.

Shortly after this, Papworth pressed into the Melbourn half and a fierce dipping volley was fired at the visitors' goal, only to see veteran keeper Mick Walker make a stunning one handed save to push the ball out for a corner.

Melbourn dominated the second half and on the hour mark Jason Gray took his tally to 41 for the season when his header was deflected into the home net following an excellent cross from Morris.

Keith Barrel, brought on for Clark in the last 20 minutes, almost made it three but the wind guided his looping header just past the post in the final 5 minutes.

Melbourn travel to Thaxted on Saturday for their final league match of the season and then meet Sutton United on Tuesday, May 5 at Cambridge City in the final of the Creake Shield.
