TWO spectacular second-half strikes clinched a deserved victory for Steeple Morden - with the win moving them to sixth in the BIS League Division 3A.

The visitors started strongly and attacked with menace down the wings with Jason Clark and Ben Holt a constant threat.

And they were in front after just seven minutes when skipper Charlie Prothero crashed a header against the bar, with in-form Dom Holt on hand to smash home the rebound for his 17th goal of the season and his 10th in his last six games.

A second was added 15 minutes later when Ben Holt's deep cross found Clark, and when his volley was cleared off the line and into the path of Martyn Lees, the latter made no mistake with a powerful finish.

Steeple remained in control, with Jamie Murphy making some key challenges in the middle of the park while the back four of Watters, Harrison, Donald and Martin Holt looked comfortable throughout.

As Steeple pressed for a third, Charlie Prothero hit the woodwork again from another corner before another well-struck effort was cleared from the line.

The home side did pull a goal back just before half time to give Steeple a brief scare, with the hosts coming out strong in the second half.

However, 20 minutes into the half, Martin Holt made the game safe when he rode a couple of challenges and unleashed a rocket of a shot from 25-yards that skimmed off the underside of the bar and into the Abington net.

Jason Clark then added an equally impressive effort shortly after, when he picked the ball up from distance and nonchalantly drilled the ball into the top corner for his first goal for the senior side to secure his side's fifth win in six games.

Manager Kenny Watters said: "The game should have been over by half time. Some of our football was breathtaking at times, but we dug in when we needed to and while some great strikes will grab the headlines I thought keeper Andy Smith was superb.
