CAMBRIDGE United were denied a fifth successive home win by a late equaliser from Forest Green Rovers at the Abbey Stadium, on Saturday. United started slowly and fell behind after just three minutes when poor defending from a corner allowed Jon Richardson to score from close range, but they levelled the scores just 15 minutes later, also from a corner, Andy Duncan heading home from new signing Jon Brady's corner-kick. When Fola Onibuje scored from another set piece in the second half, this time a wide free kick from Courtney Pitt, it looked like they had done enough to win the game, but two minutes into stoppage time United failed to deal with another Forest Green corner, and substitute Bruno Teixeira scored to make it 2-2. It was a disappointing result given United's recent excellent home form, but there were positive signs in the promising performances of recent arrivals Jon Brady on the right wing and Trevor Robinson on the left. Manager Rob Newman announced that he expected there to be more new faces arriving at the Abbey in the January transfer window, as he was in "advanced talks" with a Premiership club about loaning two players, a left-back and a right-sided player. Also in transfer news, it was announced this week that John Turner would be joining Rushden & Diamonds. The popular ex-youth-team striker made a great start to his professional career, scoring on his debut and getting a hat-trick against Northampton Town last season, but struggled to reproduce that form consistently. In other news, chairman Roger Hunt has announced that he will stand down from the Board of Directors at the end of January, due to his recent move to Wales. He said: "I leave the Club in good hands and I am sure our future is more secure now than it has been for a long time and I look forward to us regaining our league status." Also this week, it was announced that the England National Game XI will play at the Abbey Stadium in their second European Challenge Trophy match against Italy on Wednesday February 15.
