BASSINGBOURN moved five points clear at the top of the Cambridge & District League with a comfortable 87-44 win at Barrington.

Rink four set the tone for Bassingbourn with a convincing 29-7 win, with Bill Manley, Toni Infanti and Ron Ingrey all bowling well.

On rink three Ken Cleaver picked his game up after some indifferent performances recently and bowled extremely well.

Sid Manning at two also bowled well which resulted in Barrington being under pressure all night.

Skip Ken Clark made sure of a good win on this rink by pulling out any necessary conversion shots when required as Bassingbourn only lost five ends to win 17-7.

Val Francis bowled her usual steady game all night at lead on rink two. After five ends it looked like Bassingbourn were going to have an easy night, but then a five was dropped on end seven to give Barrington a 7-6 lead.

Andy Brown and Graham Parrish both put in that extra effort and Bassingbourn finally sealed the win with a four on end 16. The final score was 20-15.

Anne Brown, back from her holidays, soon got back into the swing of things and with total concentration, bowled well.

Joe Cipullo and Ian Stewart also bowled well, but Barrington's skip kept saving large scores and/or drawing the shot as they recorded their only rink win of the night, 15-11 to salvage one of the seven league points on offer.

n Bassingbourn under-16s played their first match against Great Gransden last week and emerged with a 44-29 win.

Jamie Stewart and Michael Priest were 5-3 down at the half way stage. They both then concentrated and found their line and length putting together some very good heads and only lost one more end and ran out winners 13-7.

Steven Priest and Oliver Stewart were both inconsistent on the first seven ends but managed to keep the score to 6-4.

The turning point on this rink was when Oliver managed to trail the jack on end 10 to turn a two down into a four up as they ran out 17-7 winners.

The nerves really told on rink two as Joe Clarke and Dale Warren only managed to win three of the first nine ends against two good bowlers from Gransden and found themselves 12-4 down.

They started to relax and their bowling improved. They only lost one further end and ended losing by one, but it could not prevent Bassingbourn collecting the overall victory.
